Each year, everyone can enroll and change health insurance plans freely.
Annual Open Enrollment
In 2020, the open enrollment period for 2021 coverage opens November 1 and ends December 15.
If you do not qualify for a special enrollment period, you must wait until the annual enrollment period.
Special Enrollment Period
However, you may be eligible to enroll in health insurance if you experience specific life events like:
- Marriage
- Having a child
- Losing health coverage
- Change of residence
If you receive health care through your employer, they may offer different open enrollment periods. Check with your Human Resources department to find out how and when enrollment opens.
Alternatively, if you or a family member qualifies for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you can enroll anytime during the year.
