Health Insurance Appeals

If your doctor recommends a treatment or prescribes a medication that your insurance does not cover, you can appeal.

In a health insurance appeal, a third party reviews your request for coverage and makes a decision.

First, the insurer is required to notify you in writing within a specific time. They must explain why they denied coverage. Also, they have to state your rights and the process for appeal.

Typically, it can take a few weeks for the independent board to render a decision. However, in life-threatening situations, or timeliness risks your ability to fully function, the independent organization can provide a decision within 72 hours of receipt. In those situations, you would request an expedited decision.
